Why Backups Are Only Half the Battle

A backup is only valuable if you can actually recover from it. We explain the difference between backups and tested, business-class disaster recovery.

Almost every organization we meet has “backups.” Far fewer can actually recover from them. That gap is the single most expensive assumption in small-business IT — and it usually surfaces for the first time during the worst possible moment: a ransomware event, a failed server, or a deleted database.

A backup that has never been tested is a hope, not a plan. Backups fail silently for all kinds of reasons: credentials expire, storage fills up, the job runs but skips a critical volume, or the format is incompatible with the recovery environment. The only way to know a backup works is to perform a real restore — not a checkbox, an actual recovery into a usable state.

Business-class disaster recovery goes further than a copy of your files. It asks how fast you can be operational again (Recovery Time Objective), how much data you can afford to lose (Recovery Point Objective), and whether you can run from the backup while the primary system is repaired. The answers determine whether an incident is a minor inconvenience or a business-ending event.

A sound continuity plan also keeps backups isolated from the production environment. Ransomware deliberately hunts and encrypts accessible backups — so a copy that lives on the same network, with the same credentials, offers little protection. Immutable, off-site, or air-gapped copies are what make recovery possible after a deliberate attack.

Freedom Tech builds and tests recovery plans, not just backup jobs. If you cannot answer the question “when did we last successfully restore from backup, and how long did it take?” — that is the conversation to have before you need the answer.
